April 7, 2020 Statement

April 7, 2020 Statement

In just a few weeks, our entire society has adapted to a new, temporary reality. Our staff have come together to transform education while also supporting other critical needs like childcare, food, technology, and mental health gaps.

Right now, the School Board and all MPS staff must adapt and be entirely focused on distance learning, food support, and providing childcare for emergency and health care workers.

But as Governor Walz promised in his State of the State address, “a new day will come.” And there will be a future for MPS.

The Comprehensive District Design (CDD) is about that future, so a decision by the School Board must still happen. There are related budget decisions that must be made by June 30, the end of our fiscal year. Avoiding our essential responsibilities will lead to inaccurate planning for the future and threaten our financial stability. And that will negatively impact all our students when we return in person.

The School Board will further delay the CDD vote until our regular May 12 meeting to allow staff to focus on distance learning, meeting technology needs, and connecting with students and families.

We are committed to governing, but just as we have adjusted previously, we will adapt as unpredictable health conditions unfold.

While the School Board is meeting virtually during the current health emergencies, public comments will be accepted by voicemail. These voicemails will be played during our virtual board meeting so the entire board and members of the public can hear them.

To leave a voicemail public comment for the April 14 meeting, call 612-668-1229 and follow the instructions. For the April 14 business meeting, the first 3 hours of voicemails left by April 11 at noon will be played during the April 14 meeting. Visit board.mpls.k12.mn.us/public_comment for full details.
