Board Governance and Meeting Information

All Board meetings are open to the public unless specifically Noticed as closed. Board meetings are held in the Assembly Room at the Educational Services Center, 1250 W. Broadway Ave., Minneapolis, unless otherwise noted. Board Sub-Committee meetings are held in various conference rooms in the Educational Services Center and identified in meeting Notices.

Who We Are
The Minneapolis Board of Education is a policy-making body responsible for selecting the superintendent and overseeing the district's budget, curriculum, personnel and facilities. The school board is granted authority to carry out these duties by the State of Minnesota and the Minnesota Legislature. The Minneapolis Board of Education is responsible for policies that govern education for Minneapolis Public Schools students. The Superintendent serves as the Board's Chief Executive Officer and administers its policies.

MPS Board of Education consists of 9 Directors from various districts and at large.

Board Meetings

The Board of Education typically conducts a Regular Business meeting on the second Tuesday of each month and a Committee of the Whole meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month, unless otherwise noticed.

  • Second Tuesday, Regular Business Meetings
    • Meeting will begin promptly at 5:30 pm and run until approximately 8:00 pm.
    • Public Comment runs from 5:30 to 6:15 pm.
  • Fourth Tuesday, Committee of the Whole Meetings
    • The board will meet most months on the fourth Tuesday for a Committee of the Whole meeting.
    • Meetings will start at 6:00 pm and end promptly at 8:00 pm.
    • The purpose of a Committee of the Whole meeting is to gather as a full board and discuss pending topics in-depth. As these meetings are structured to be discussion meetings, no formal action will be taken by the Board on any topic and the Board will not take voting action during a Committee of the Whole meeting.
    • The public is invited to attend the Committee of the Whole meetings, but public comments are not scheduled during these meetings.

Meeting Notices:
Each Board meeting is noticed no less than three days prior to when the meeting occurs. Notices are displayed for the public on the bulletin board at our District offices, located at 1250 W. Broadway Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55411. They are also posted on our website.

Public Comment on any subject, including pending action items
At each regular monthly meeting, the Board will accept Public Comments from approximately 5:30 - 6:15 p.m.** towards the beginning of the Regular Business meeting. Each public comment is subject to a 3-minute time limit.

Procedure for Public Comment
You are asked to provide your name, address, phone number, e-mail address and topic if you wish to speak. Information / Comment slips are available at each meeting and are located on the back table. Comments will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.

Regular school board meetings are broadcast live on Minneapolis Comcast Cable Channel 15. A Board of Education meeting playback schedule is available at Channel 15. You can also listen to a delayed broadcast of the meetings on the website.
